AI-Use Statement
Last updated October 14, 2026
Human First Writer is writing software for people who write their own work. AI is an optional set of editing tools, used only when you ask, and every suggestion is yours to accept or reject. This page explains exactly what happens when you use them.
You write; AI helps only when you press a button
- There is no chat box and no free-form prompt. Each AI tool does one defined job, such as shortening a passage, fixing spelling and grammar, or smoothing a transition.
- Nothing is sent to an AI model until you press a tool. Nothing runs in the background.
- Each suggestion is shown beside your original, change by change. Your page is untouched until you accept, and you can keep any part as you wrote it.
- Before an accepted suggestion is applied, a copy of the page is saved in its version history, so you can always go back.
What is sent, and to whom
When you press a tool, the text you selected (or the page, if nothing is selected), a little of the text around it for context, and, for spelling and grammar, your project’s dictionary are sent over an encrypted connection to our AI service, which passes them to Anthropic, the company behind the Claude models. The tool names the model it uses. Anthropic’s commercial terms do not allow it to train its models on this text; it may keep it for a limited time for safety and abuse monitoring under its own policies.
What we keep
Our AI service handles your text in memory only. It does not store, log or keep a copy of the text you send or the reply. For each request it records only the facts needed for billing and limits: the tool, the model, the amount of text in tokens, the cost, the time and whether it worked. Your writing itself is stored by the Writer only as part of your projects, as described in our Privacy Policy, and is never used to train AI models.
Allowances and limits
- The AI plan includes a monthly AI allowance; your account shows how much is used. Top-ups add more for 60 days.
- The 14-day free trial includes AI tools, with a limited allowance and a daily number of requests.
- Daily and per-request limits protect the service. We may pause AI tools for everyone briefly if a provider has problems.
Using your own AI key
- On the own-key plan, or when your allowance runs out and you choose to, requests use an Anthropic API key you supply.
- Your key is encrypted when saved, used only for your own requests, and never shown in full again. You can remove it at any time.
- Anthropic bills you directly for that use, under your own agreement with them. You are responsible for those charges and for any spending limits on your key.
Authorship and responsibility
AI suggestions can be wrong, bland or too close to existing text, so read them before accepting. You are the author of your work and responsible for what you publish or submit. The Writer is not a ghostwriting or essay-writing service: please follow any rules on AI assistance that apply to you, such as those of your school, publisher or employer.
Deletion
Because the AI service keeps no text, there is nothing to delete there. When you delete your account, or 12 months after a plan ends, your writing is deleted from the Writer.
